'Anna Mary Robertson Moses (1860-1961), [Grandma Moses] American painterToday's theme was suggested by a fascinating talk I attended on memory improvement I am sure we could all use some tips to improve our memories, as in the discussion time at the talk, it appeared that most of us have some sort of problem remembering particular things at one time or anotherNow, I am not too bad at remembering numbers, (I can still remember our telephone number from when I was a child!) but I hold my hand up and say I need to improve on remembering people's names It usually takes me a few goes to get a name imprinted on my brain cells, although I could probably tell you exactly where I met the person, what they did, maybe even what they were wearing and also what we were talking about at the time! It is definitely something I need to work on, especially as I am now meeting loads of new people at networking events Fortunately, I have found in most cases that honesty is the best policy and if I just apologize and say "I'm so sorry, I've forgotten your name" people will forgive me - and this is usually enough for me to remember their name the second time aroundSo how is your memory? Are you like me, finding numbers fine, but having a problem with names? Are you constantly misplacing things? Do you forget important events, like birthdays, anniversaries, even meetings? How much of your brain's potential are you actually using? One interesting fact given to us at the talk was that our brain's function actually improves with age! Our thinking, creativity and our general potential is enhanced by all that we have learned and experienced as we have gone through life How can you utilize this to move you forward this week? What have you already in your brain that can be pulled out and polished off to assist you in your current endeavors?Have you put off learning something new because you think you won't be able to remember anything? The phrase "You can't teach an old dog new tricks", is a fallacy (See above) We are all capable of learning new things, just at a different pace One tip I learned was to take regular breaks whilst learning, as your brain will automatically be integrating, organizing associations and storing information while you do something different If you also regularly review, even briefly, what you been learning, the information is more likely to be retained and remembered Pretty good, hey?The first tip we were given for improving our memory in social situations was to mentally prepare ourselves to succeed This can be related to so many aspects of our lives How many times have you said to yourself "I know I'm useless at remembering names, so I am bound to make a hash of it!" or some such thing? What message are you giving yourself - and that poor brain of yours? How about turning it around and telling yourself that this time you are going to use every tip and technique you have ever learned to ensure that you remember the names of every new person you are introduced to? (If you need a list of tips for this, please contact me and I'll send you one)Those people who live longest are active physically, intellectually and have a good social life They have also been found to be contented people with flexible personalities who are also fun lovers If you intend, like to me, to be one of the fit and active mature people, rather than the kind who spends their day sitting, frail and frightened, then the time to build that future is now! Adding activity into any part of your day, especially if it is something fun, can only be seen as an investment in your futureDo you know what? If your brain and its function is currently causing you no concern, that is great Working to enhance your brain's potential is not obligatory Be aware however, that the more stimuli our brains receive the better they will function Every new experience is recorded by the brain as a connection which if left unused will fade away As the old saying goes, "Use it or lose it!"Your brain functions by creating links and associations to connect one piece of information to another Each day, take time to practice this linking, using as many of your sense as you can, to help you retain and then recall information For example, you start with one word, such as "Love" and then make a chain of words that you associate with the original word in order to remember Each of us will choose different words, but my example would be "Love", "Heart", "Pump", "Blood", "Red" Your chain can be as long as you like You can even investigate the various systems to help you improve your memoryWe are sometimes referred to as being 'Left Brain' or 'Right Brain' people, depending on how people perceive our strengths However, the logical side of our brain (the left), does not function in isolation from the right, artistic side and the reverse is also true By utilizing both sides of our brain in a creative way, we will heighten our experience of the world, as well as being able to contribute more in all aspects of our livesYou don't need to spend cash to stimulate and enhance the function of your brain You can do it for nothing! Like many of these things, all it will cost you is time and effort And when you're 99 and running mental rings around all the youngsters, it will definitely be worth it!* With many thanks to Kate Boyd of Mindpower Training Ltd of Dornoch, Sutherland, Scotland Kate Harper is a Motivation Coach based in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland Check out her website http://wwwharpercoachingcomShe works with people from all over the world who are seeking change in their lives If that is you, please take a look at Kate's website Her special interests are the promotion of Wellbeing and Self Confidence through her coaching"The distance is nothing; it is only the first step that is difficult" Madame Marie du DeffandTake your first step today and contact KateGo here to get my free 7 day mini e-Course on Procrastination - http://wwwharpercoachingcom/HC_e-Courses_Menu_Page2htm Article Source: http://EzineArticlescom/?expert=Kate_Harper ?>
